Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” And that’s precisely what we see in a new song Kendrick Lamar dropped on his Instagram page on September 11 when he mentioned Christian hip-hop artists Lecrae and Dee-1.

In the song, Lamar states, “Sometimes I wonder what Lecrae would do?” and then says, “I wanna be empathetic, my heart like Dee-1.”

While the song is explicit, it reflects on the destructive nature of today’s culture and criticizes the glorification of violence and materialism. Kendrick lets us into the current state of his duality. He raps about a tension between empathy and the harsh realities of life, questioning how to approach change—much like Lecrae’s grace and Dee-1’s integrity. The song emphasizes a need for deeper values, rejecting the superficiality that saturates society and calls for restoring truth and morals in leadership.

Both Lecrae and Dee-1 expressed their gratitude for Kendrick on X (formerly known as Twitter):

Lecrae and Dee-1 have proven themselves to be influential and impactful not just in the Christian hip-hop space but in hip-hop as a whole. It is important to note that just two hours before the song’s release, Lecrae posted the following tweet on X:

This should serve as a reminder not to be weary in well-doing because what you do for God will last. So, in all that you do, continue to keep God first. You never know who’s watching or who you’re impacting. Your journey isn’t just for you but for the Glory of God worldwide.
