A Wake County mom is being charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse after leaving her 1yr and 6yr old kids in a hot car while she ran into TJ Maxx to get a shirt for a funeral.
According to source WRAL, court documents showed the children were left in a car parked unattended in an unshaded area “during peak heat hours,” when heat indexes rose to 100 degrees.
The mom explained that she turned off the car and rolled down the windows because the car runs hot if you leave the car running and the air on. She says “the line was super long… I was in there or about 15 minutes.”
Police surveillance footage show her entering the store at 1:59pm and still inside the store at 2:39pm. Physicans explain how quickly temperatures can rise in a hot car and how extremely dangerous it is to leave a small child inside.
The mom also responded:
“The only concern is them being the car underage by themselves,” ….. “But child abuse, really? That’s [an] over exaggeration.”
She believes the charges are too harsh. “Nothing was wrong with them. They were absolutely fine. They didn’t start crying until he put handcuffs on me in front of my son,” she said.
